Reasons Why Baby Shower Is Getting More Popular In The Past Decade
he arrival of a newborn is always celebrated with great excitement in the family. The baby shower is the most awaited occasion for the mothers and fathers to be. These days, the baby shower is celebrated by showering a huge range of gifts to the to-be parents and celebrating the occasion by having cakes and other delicious items. The party planners organize all the baby shower activities, party menus, and the whole ceremony decorations. The to-be mother is pampered with gifts ranging from baby products to spa treatments.
But, the baby showers have changed dramatically over the ages. In the ancient age too, the addition of a newer member of the family was celebrated with great enthusiasm. Let’s see the change in trends for the celebration of a newborn.
The Ancient Era
In the ancient times, families celebrated the welcoming of a newborn by showering fruits and sweets to the mother for healthy growth of the child. The mother was also forbidden from going to temples or festivals to eliminate pollution due to birth. In many places, the pregnancy after the birth was also celebrated by shouting after the labor to indicate that peace has arrived(basically in Ancient Greece). Also, the return of the mother in the society was celebrated which was held after 10 days of the birth.
The Medieval Era
During the medieval era, the celebration got centralized to the God. In Europe, a Baptism ceremony was held after the day the bundle of joy is born. This ceremony was celebrated to announce the godparents of the newborn. The child is showered with gifts from the godparents. Mothers were not allowed in the Baptism ceremony.
The Renaissance Era
In this era, the Baptism ceremony remained intact but the mother was also honored and was showered with gifts that included-food, dresses, decorative items and other valuable gifts.
The Victorian Era
In this era, the mothers were forbidden from being seen in the public, but after the birth of the baby, the mother is honored by celebrating the birth of the baby by hosting a tea party organized by the friends of the new mother. In this tea party, the mother is honored by close friends and family and is showered with gifts for daily use as well as for the mother’s ease. During that era, the Grandmothers also designed handcrafted gifts for the little ones.
The Modern Era
Nowadays the way of celebration of baby showers is a lot different from how it was celebrated in the earlier times. These days, along with the mothers, the to-be-fathers are also honored for the birth of the baby. The guest list for the baby shower is not restricted to only grandmothers, sisters, and girlfriends. These days uncles and other relatives, as well as friends, are also invited.
So, we can see that along these years, the baby shower has evolved but the basic concept is still the same that is to honor the mother and to shower her and the baby with gifts and sweets.
